Expansion and renovation of theatre and congress centre Orpheus. We have reconstructed the existing theatre hall, and expanded the building with a theatre/concert hall for 1,200 visitors, including foyer and new artists’ and public facilities. The congress centre was expanded as well, and a car park for 500 cars was realised.

Installations, Flexibility & Sustainability

According to the Programme of Requirements, we had to work with a relatively tight and demanding budget. Each modification, both with regard to installations and in a constructional meaning was immediately assessed on its financial consequences, often even before the installation-technical modifications were implemented. As a result of this, each design proposal within the design team could be reacted upon quickly.

At Orpheus, lighting is designed in such way that it exactly complies with the aesthetic requirements of the architect, but also with the lighting-technical requirement as well as the financial preconditions. The extremely low background sound for the new theatre hall is unique in the Netherlands (and even in Europe). This confronted us with very high and unusual requirements to the installations. The result of all design efforts was that in this hall no single installation sound is audible.

Sustainability measurements applied
For the renovation and expansion of theatre and congress centre Orpheus, an underground heat and cold storage whilst maintaining the existing trees was selected.

High-quality cold energy is stored during winter in a water-feeding sand layer deep underground. A pump brings the surface water up again during the summer. The cold is withdrawn from this water by means of a heat exchanger. Subsequently, the heated water returns into the ground. During the winter, the heated water can in turn serve as pre-heating again. Two water pumps see to the energy-saving heating of all the pre-heated water. This does not concern a closed system that is kept under pressure continuously. Thus no pollution of the surface water can take place.
