The project encompassed the following elements:

This related to a construction project in which part of the structure is integrated in the foot of the sea dyke.

The client, the Noorderpoort secondary, vocational and adult education college, imposed the most stringent sustainable requirements that were feasible within the specified financial framework. This was achieved with the use of BREEAM from the design right through to completion and acceptance. The ZEP project was based on a BREEAM target of 'Good'.

The design covered the following:

  • Heat/cold generation with ground collectors in combination with a heat pump
  • Hot water solar boiler
  • Demand controlled ventilation
  • LED lighting in circulation spaces and sanitary areas
  • Energy-efficient lift
  • Air-handling unit equipped with transparent wall for education purposes
  • LED site lighting in combination with reflective site paving
  • Energy monitoring facilities

A number of sustainability options, for which the installations and building have been prepared ready for later decision-making, where relevant:

  • Solar panels on the roof
  • Wind turbine on the roof
  • Water turbine in the discharge sluice

 
BIM/3-D

The building, structures and installations are all parts of an integral design. The BIM method was used, with a focus on a 3D design (Revit). This is the Netherlands' first fully integrated project completed in BIM.

The buildings, structures and building installations were designed with Revit (3D). Valstar Simonis used Revit for the 3D design of the building installations from the initial concept right through to the completion of the building specifications and drawings.
